This war is known as The Battle of St George’s Caye which led to the defeat of the Spanish forces. Belize was named the Colony of British Honduras in 1840 and became a Crown Colony in 1871.

But things changed with the advent of the 20th Century when constitutional changes ruled the day. In January 1964, internal-self government under a ministerial system was granted. It was in 1973 that British Honduras was renamed Belize.

The most important part of the history of Belize dates back to 1981 when independence was granted to Belize on September 21, 1981.
