History of Belize




The History of Belize offers a chronological list of events which dates back thousands of years. There are a number of historical attractions in Belize which reflects back on the history of Belize.

According to the recorded facts and figures, Belize history can be traced back to early 16th Century BC. At this point of time, Belize was inhabited by the Maya civilization. You will get to know more about the civilization if you visit the innumerable museums which are storehouses of historical information. The various historical studies in Belize state that the Maya inhabitants were farmers who excelled in stone work, architecture and fabric making.

Many of the archaeological ruins reflecting the lifestyle of the Maya civilization can be visited in Belize. Prominent among them are the Altun Ha, Caracol, Cahal Pech, Lamanai, Nim Li Punit, Santa Rita and Xunantunich.

One can find more and more recorded facts after the advent of Europeans, in 1502. The Spanish were the first to arrive at Belize, details of European settlement can be found from 1638. The early 1700’s saw the Spanish establish their hold over Belize.

But prominent European roots were established and can be studies after the arrival of the British in Belize. Till late 1700s the country was ruled by Spanish Crown but in 1798 United Kingdom went into a war with the Spanish colonizers for the rule over Belize. This war is known as The Battle of St George’s Caye which led to the defeat of the Spanish forces. Belize was named the Colony of British Honduras in 1840 and became a Crown Colony in 1871.

But things changed with the advent of the 20th Century when constitutional changes ruled the day. In January 1964, internal-self government under a ministerial system was granted. It was in 1973 that British Honduras was renamed Belize.

The most important part of the history of Belize dates back to 1981 when independence was granted to Belize on September 21, 1981.
