Fort Cairns Market Square, Orange Walk was named to honor Lieutenant-Governor William Wellington Cairns who served in the army from 1870 to 1874. The Fort was completed in the year 1876 as a defensive stance to safeguard the people of Orange Walk from Indian assaults and other threats suspected to conquer this mighty land. The fort featured a ditch which included earthworks and was surrounded by a wooden fence. On the eastern side, there was a single gate closed by a drawbridge. A town hall is located in the area now. Defensive structures were constructed on the southeast and northwest corners.
