La Milpa
La Milpa, one of the popular Orange Walk Tourist Attractions, is situated amidst a tropical forest in one of the largest archaeological sites in country, Rio Bravo Conservation Area. La Milpa served to host ceremonies and festivals in the ancient times. The La Milpa site houses 85 structures and 24 courtyards. The tallest structure here rises to a height of 66 feet. It is one of Mayan world's largest plazas. The region is dotted with various types of dwellings ranging from grand palaces to round huts. A three court acropolis is situated towards the southern part of La Milpa.
Lamani Ruins, Orange Walk
Lamani in Orange Walk is one of the most visited Tourist Attractions in Orange Walk. It is situated in New River Lagoon . Lamaini site covering an area of 950 acres is one of the largest archaeological sites in the country. It houses Mayan ruins. About around hundred buildings have been unearthed during excavation.. NIO-43 is the largest Mayan ruin discovered here. Two Christian Churches, sugar mill, reservoir are amongst the ruins found in Lamanai, Orange Walk. These structures were built in the Mayan times. The Lamanai Ruins in Orange Walk were discovered for the first time in the year 1917. However, in 1974 the Royal Ontario Museum excavated the site properly and preserved it. The region around the Lamanai ruins is home to various species of animals and birds. There is a beautiful lagoon surrounding the Lamanai You will get to see various types of waterfowls wading in the waters of the lagoon. Some of the other attractions here are Jaguar Temple, Mask Temple and High temple.
