The reserve is nine square kilometers and has been designated as Belize's national park in May 1997. It is also on the list of The World Monument Funds 100 Most Endangered Sites in the World. The constructions date back from the Middle Preclassic (500 B.C.) to the Terminal Classic (1000 A.D.) period.
In an area of 100 acres there are twenty-five identified plazas. The whole reserve is divided into three sectors namely Pilar Poniente (West), Nohol (South) Pilar and Xaman (North) Pilar. There are a number of places to walk through like underground corbeled tunnel and a standing temple. The reserve also houses hundreds of species of birds and animals.
Western Belize Caves, San Ignacio There are a number of caves like the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave, Barton Creek Cave and Che Chem Ha Cave. The Actun Tunichil Muknal cave has ancient pathways which were used by the Mayans. While going to this cave you will pass through jungles, trek across rivers and remote jungle trails. There are burial chambers with calcified remains in the caves. The Barton Creek Cave is a remote underground water cave system which can be explored in canoes. You will see skeletal remains, large and colorful formations and other cultural artifacts left behind by the Mayans. The Che Chem Ha Cave was used by the Mayans as a ceremonial center for their after-life, blood letting rituals and as a storehouse for grain.
Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, San Ignacio - This 300-square-mile area features Caribbean Pine and bracken ferns. It also has waterfalls, streams and caves. You can visit the Rio Frio Cave which is draped by vines and trees. The cave has amazing stalagmites and stalactites.
Chaa Creek Natural History Center, San Ignacio This center was opened in 1995 and is an excellent center to learn about the environment. It also has a butterfly breeding center.
