Sightseeing in San Ignacio is incomplete without visiting the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, San Ignacio. The town of San Ignacio is the capital of the largest district in Belize, the Cayo District. The Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, San Ignacio is one of the famous natural attractions of the region.

This reserve covers a 300-square-mile area and features Caribbean Pine and bracken ferns instead of the tropical forests and Lianas which cover most of Belize. The reserve consists of beautiful waterfalls, streams and caves which you will love to walk through. On the northern edge of the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, San Ignacio is the village of San Antonio while along the southern edge is Augustine which is the administrative center of the reserve.

The Mountain Pine Ridge features massive uplifting of ancient rocks which are amongst the oldest formations in the Americas. The reserve has a habitat known as the ‘pine ridge’ which is characterized by dense stands of Caribbean Pine and poor soils. While exploring the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, San Ignacio you will come across a 1000 foot fall. This gorgeous ribbon of water drops from the pine forest to the tropical forest below.

Also within the reserve is the Rio On, which is a cascading river tumbling over some of the oldest rocks in the Americas. This powerful water has eroded numerous pools which are perfect for bathing. These pools at the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, San Ignacio are connected by small clear waterfalls that have a relaxing massaging effect when you lie underneath them.

After passing Augustine which is the administrative center you will come across the Rio Frio Cave. This cave in the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve in San Ignacio is draped by vines and trees. You can walk through the cave using a flashlight and see the amazing stalagmites and stalactites which have created a mesmerizing limestone world. For visiting the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, San Ignacio you should carry extra water and food as the journey is a little tough. You can also stay at a number of resorts in the area for overnight excursions.
