National Parks in Bhutan

National Parks of Bhutan

Jigme Dorji National Park

Located in the northwestern part of Bhutan and covering an area of 4350 square kilometers, it is the largest protected area system in Bhutan. It was upgraded to a national park in 1993. The park is home to many wildlife species like snow leopard, Bengal tigers, Himalayan black bear, common leopard, yak, blue sheep, marmot, raven, takin, fox, wildboar, sambar, musk deer, wild dog, pika, clouded leopard and so on.

Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park

Previously known as Black Mountain National Park, the park is located in central Bhutan and covers an area of 1730 square kilometers. Some of the wildlife species found in the park include red panda, golden langur which is endemic to Bhutan, common langur, sambar, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, tiger, leopard and some 449 species of birds.

Royal Manas National Park

Situated in the south central part of Bhutan, Royal Manas National Park covers an area of 1023 square kilometers. The park covers 3 dzongkhags of Zhemgang, Sarpang and Samdrupjongkhar. The park includes a wide range of habitats from lowland tropical systems to the permanent ice fields harboring a diversity of flora and fauna.

Thrumshingla National Park

Lying in the east central part of Bhutan, the park encompasses an area of 889 square kilometers and covers parts of Bumthang, Mongar, Lhuntshe and Zhemgang dzongkhags. The park is also known as the place where 22 species of rhododendrons are growing in their natural habitat and now protected as the “Rhododendron Garden”.

Bomdeling Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in north east Bhutan, the Bomdeling Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1995 and features rare animals such as blue sheep, snow leopards, red panda, musk deer and Himalayan black bear.

Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary
