A moderate climate and natural drainage from the Phochu (male) and Mochu (female) rivers, the fertile Punakha valley produces abundant crops. Punakha served as the capital of Bhutan until 1995.

  • Thimphu

    Located on the banks of its own river, the bustling city is home to the respected Bhutanese Royal family and to several foreign missions and development projects.

  • Tongsa

    The Royal Family’s ancestral home is Tongsa. In the center of Bhutan, Tongsa offers a welcome rest to travelers. It is an ideal shopper’s paradise.

  • Tashigang

    Tashigange is used as the market place for the hill people from Merak and Sakteng. The 17th century Dzong is built on top of a cliff on the edge of town.

  • Tashiyangtse

    A few kilometers north of Tashigang, Tashiyangtese Dzong is only half-hour walk from the road.

  • Wangduephodrang

    Wangduephodrang is the last town on the central highway before central Bhutan.
