The Textile Museum, Thimphu

Situated in the western part of Bhutan, the capital city of Thimphu accounts for a fascinating tourist spot. The Textile Museum, Thimphu is one of the major tourist attractions in Thimphu. The aim of this museum is to conserve the traditional textiles in the region. The Textile Museum, Thimphu is an apt spot to learn about the local art and culture.

The Anoxic Storage system is used here to preserve the textiles in a transparent film container. It is done to prevent insects and other climactic conditions from affecting the textiles. This system was incorporated after detailed studies and discussion with the foreign researchers.

The museum aims to save about 150 textiles, which are being used to manufacture hats, tunics, and ghos from the 1800’s till the modern day. The rich and marvelous heritage of textiles is well-maintained and preserved in the museum. Few textiles which are not to be folded, are rolled carefully in a daphne paper followed by smooth muslin cloth. It is then preserved in PVC pipes.

Two non-government bodies in the United States – the Betty Grant Program and the Friends of Bhutan’s Culture have sponsored to a great extent so that the anoxic storage system can be used in this museum. Few other projects executed by the museum are for the preservation of the 18th and 19th century Chinese embroidery work and the conservation of the thongdroels at Talo Monastery and Sangchoekhor.

The prominent themes on which the museum has opened exhibitions and displays include weft pattern weaves, accomplishment in textile arts, warp style weaves, textiles from original fibers, the royal collection and the function of textiles in religion. It is here where the National Design Competition is hosted every year.

The royal collection showcased in the museum features a brocade crown worn by the first king of the Wangchuck Dynasty, uzham worn by the second king, and a princess crown worn by Ashi Wangmo, who was the sister of the first king. Among the other items, one can notice the Namzas and other appurtenances which were used by the kings of the Wangchuck Dynasty.
