Trashi Chhoe Dzong in Thimphu was constructed in 1216 by a lama named Gyalwa Lhanangpa. Earlier it was known as Dohon Dzong. At present, Trashi Chhoe Dzong refers to the ‘Fortress of the Glorious Religion’. This name was coined by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.

Trashi Chhoe Dzong, Thimphu consists of the Throne Room. Tourists can get to see the Ministries of Finance and Home Affairs within this Dzong. The offices of the king too are located in here. Apart from these, the Dzong also harbors the offices and abode of the Chief Abbot or Je Khenpo, and those of the Central Monk Body.

The structure of the Dzong is quite unique and strange. It features two chief entranceways. The first entrance extends to the administrative department. The second entranceway runs till the monastic buildings.

The artistic designs and structures refer to the traditional Dzong architecture. This place is actually regarded and serves as the summer residence of the Central Monk Body in Thimphu.

The modern design of the area of the Trashi Chhoe Dzong, Thimphu aimed at reflecting various aspects - the function of the state as performed by the king or the spiritual head of Bhutan; the consolidation of the various heritage structures and the natural wonders; the balances between legislative, executive and judiciary bodies of the government; and, the position of the people within the compound.

The eight-fold way links the Trashi Chhoe Dzong, Thimphu to the judiciary. The 108 chortens connect the gardens to the complex. Usually vehicles are not permitted within this zone. Tourists need travel in the area on foot. However, there are special arrangements for the physically challenged people.
