Belem is a city in the northern part of Brazil. It is the capital and also the biggest city of the state of Para. Its urban area has approximately 2.09 million inhabitants. It is the entrance gate and, together with Manaus, the most important city in the Brazilian Amazon area. It is also recognized as Cidade das Mangueiras known as the city of mango trees due to the number of those trees found in the city. Belem is served by the Val de Caes International Airport that connects the city to the rest of the country and other cities in South America. Brazilians often refer to the city as Belem do Para rather than just Belem so as to distinguish it from Bethlehem in the West Bank
The Teatro da Paz or Peace Theatre, Belem was built in 1874 during the rubber boom in the Amazon region and can seat an audience of 1100. The curtain with a symbol of the Republic came from Paris.
Apart from Peace Theatre, Belem the guests can also visit many other attractions in Belem including Ladeira do Castelo. The Ladeira do Castelo, which links the fort with the old town, is the city's oldest street, lined with buildings faced with panels of Portuguese azulejos and superb churches. Many of the buildings date from the middle of the 18th century, when Belem drew in artists from many European countries, who brought the neo classical method to Brazil.
Again after Peace Theatre, Belem the guests can also pay a visit to the Nossa Senhora das Merces. Located to the east of the Ver-o-Peso Market, the church of the convent of Nossa Senhora das Mercas, begun in 1640 and completed in 1748. Some art historians believe that Landi was involved in the reconstructing of the church in 1777 and thoroughly altered the original design.
The guests can also visit by moving a little way south of the Jesuit College is the Cathedral of Belem, the foundation stone of which was laid in 1748 on the plan of Joao V of Portugal; the building was completed in 1771. The neo classical towers and gable were designed by Antonio Giuseppe Landi, an architect born in Bologna in 1708 who settled in Belem in 1753.
There is also the Cathedral. Landi is believed to have designed it. The present one was made in Rome and presented to the Cathedral by Pope Pius XI. It includes a painting of the Virgin by the Lisbon painter Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho.
