Located in the northern part of Brazil, Belem is the capital city of the state of Para. It is in fact the largest metropolitan city in the state with a population of about 2.09 millions. Belem is the entry point for Brazilian Amazon region and is thus holds an important position in the history of the country.

Belem in Brazil:
Belem, one of the important Brazil Tourist Destinations, was first found by Captain Francisco Caldeiras de Castelo Branco in 1616. He was sent by the Portuguese king in order to protect the region from French, British and Dutch colonization endeavors. He had built a fortress for the purpose that came to be termed as Forte do Castelo. The city was initially known as Feliz Lusitania, and later was renamed as Santa Maria do Grao Para and also Santa Maria de Balam Grao Para.

Belem economy:
Belem has earned a high reputation in the world economy. With its rubber plantations, Belem today is one of the most important markets for rubber. From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, Belem gained higher standards in the world. The city prospered many important buildings like Palácio Lauro Sodré, Colégio Gentil Bitencourt, Teatro da Paz, Palácio Antônio Lemos and the Ver-o-Peso market were constructed.

Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi is one of the major tour attractions in Belem. It is a research institute that was founded in 1866. Formerly known as Para Museum of National History and Ethnography, the places aims at preserving the cultural heritage of Brazil and also promotes regional development. It aims at increasing the public awareness through its museums, zoological parks and botanical gardens and so on.

Ver-o-peso in Belem:
It is the largest open-market in Brazil and symbolizes Belem. The market is famous for the different kinds of fish, fresh fruits, ornamental plants, artesanato and also for the grass used for making tea, banns and other smokings.

First inaugurated in the year 2000, this is a must-see in Belem. There are three iron sheds in the Station where one can see exhibitions.
