The Manaus Zoo is spread over an area of 13 kilometers or 8 miles from the city on the Estrada da Ponta Grande, containing 300 animals of the Amazon region. The Zoo is managed by the Brazilian Army and has approximately 300 species of animals from Amazonas fauna, including monkeys, wild cats, otters, snakes, alligators, macaws, tapir and turtles.
The Zoo’s exquisite Amazonia habitat exhibit offers you the opportunity to experience a bit of Amazonian wildlife, to explore the flow of the river, the canopy, the wealth of biological diversity and the lives of the people living there. The Zoo in Manaus is a part of the army’s jungle-warfare-training center, and many of the animals were captured by soldiers on patrol.
The collection of animals is great starting from black and spotted jaguars, cougars and smaller cats, toucans to macaws. The Manaus Zoo is the largest and most complex exhibit that was opened to the public in the year 1992. The 15,000 square foot rainforest habitat of the exhibit includes a tropical river and a 55,000 gallon aquarium for viewing of the Amazon River fish.
Visitors will find more than 350 species of plants, including 50 foot tall trees, tropical vines and epiphytes. This Zoo in Manaus is also home to dozens of species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects typical of the Amazon Basin.
The National Manaus Zoo is open every day of the year except on December 25.
