Casa das Rosas, Sao Paulo

Casa das Rosas, Sao Paulo is another jewel in the crown of the arts and cultural scenario of Sao Paulo. A must visit while you travel to Sao Paulo, Casa das Rosas, Sao Paulo is actually a French-style mansion with gardens inspired by those at the Versailles. Also known as the House of the Roses, it was built in 1935 by famous Paulistano architect Ramos de Azevedo for one of his beloved daughters. The building was home to the family until 1986. After that, it was made an official municipal landmark. Later, it was opened as a cultural center. One of the few remaining early-20th-century buildings on the avenue, the grand building stands in a stark contrast with the towering skyscrapers of Paulista.

Casa das Rosas, Sao Paulo stands at the near end of the Avenida Paulista which starts from Praça Oswaldo Cruz on the edge of the Paraíso district. Casa das Rosas in Sao Paulo with the Galeria Estadual de Arte or the State Art Gallery, is a 4-storey building spread across a total area of 2845 square meters. The building was the last one designed by Ramos de Azevedo who designed other structures like the Municipal Theatre to his credit. Use of glass panels, Belgian floor tiles and Portuguese marble gives the interior a distinctive appeal and a classic charm. The building derived its name from the French-style rose gardens planted in geometric patterns around it.

The reopening of Casa das Rosas, Sao Paulo in September 19, 1995 was a remarkable event in the art and cultural arena of the city. The plan was to establish it as a differentiated cultural space dedicated to art exhibitions. And, with the aid of state-of-the-art arrangements including computerized services, it has evolved into one of the finest art centers the city can boast of. Today, the activities taken place at Casa das Rosas, Sao Paulo are mostly directed to reading and investigation.

In December of 2004, Casa das Rosas, Sao Paulo came to be known as the Casa das Rosas Haroldo de Campos Poetry and Literature Cultural Space. The collections of the 35 thousand library volumes of the poet, translator and essayist Haroldo de Campos are now open to the public. Apart from the books, the family has also donated the poet's office to the Culture Secretary. The library features rare books like the first books editions with Octavio Paz and João Cabral de Melo Neto autography.

The Art Gallery at Casa das Rosas, Sao Paulo, opened in 1991, has approximately 300 works, prints, pictures, sculpture and installations on display. The collection covers works of artists like Oscar Pereira da Silva, Di Cavalcanti and Portinari as well as works by contemporary artists like Arcângelo Ianelli.
