The collection of the Museum Paulista has its origins in a collection assembled by Colonel Joaquim Teresa. These were specimens of Natural History (zoology, botany and mineralogy) and pieces of ethnographic and historical interest.

In the year 1893, according to the direction of the German expert Hermann von Ihering, Museu Paulista, Sao Paulo was moved to a new location. The new edifice of this museum was set on the banks of the Ipiranga. At that time, the museum gave stress on forming sets of historical documents, especially relating to the account of St. Paul. It not only included some original material but also featured some images, objects and architectural materials.

Presently there is a collection of more than 125,000 units, including iconography, objects and documentation archives and seiscentismo of the middle of the twentieth century. The most well known object of the collection is the 1888 painting called Independência ou Morte by Pedro Americo.
