Brunei Arts & Handicrafts Center was established on 1st September in 1975 in a place called Kampong Perpindahan Berakas which is about 8 kilometers from the city of Bandar Seri Begawan. The cultural center was officially inaugurated by the late Sultan Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien on 1st December 1984. The cultural center was built with an objective to revive the disappearing arts and handicrafts of the local artisans and women weavers as well as to encourage the people to produce more and more arts and handicrafts. The art and handicraft center is also a training center itself to train the people who are interested in the craft and to popularize it.
It is a great place to see the various exhibitions held here regarding the traditional art and handicraft regarding silver smith, brass ware, keris (dagger), basketry and gold brocade weaving. Jong Sarat is a traditional garment made with gold and silver thread which are used to weddings.
