Kampong Ayer (the water village), Bander Seri Begawan is one of the most important tourist attractions in Bander. Kampong Ayer (the water village), Bander Seri Begawan has houses on stilts and stretches into the sea for about 1640 feet. The place can be reached by a taxi or a person can also reach the place by taking walk along the Brunei River. The tourists should always try to negotiate the fare charged by the taxi drivers as the cabbies always tend to charge extra. The village presents a beautiful site with many houses floating on water. The people are very friendly and hospitable and welcome the tourists with open arms into their homes.

The Kampong Ayer (the water village) has a total population of about 10,000 people which is roughly ten percent of the nation’s population. The majority of the buildings of Kampong Ayer (the water village) are constructed on stilts.

The Kampong Ayer (the water village) mainly consists of structures which are about 4200 in number. The structures consist mainly of homes, restaurants, shops, schools, etc. The main mode of transportation is the private water taxi which is nothing but a long speed boat. The village resembles a slum from a distance. Some of the residents have the habit of keeping potted plants and chickens. In addition, the place has a unique heritage of housing wooden homes with ornamented interiors.

People have lived in this place for more than 1300 years. It was hailed as the Venice of the east by Antonio Pigafetta.The district is considered to be culturally very rich and it preserves the origins of the river dwellers. According to the famous and noted Professor (Historian) Abdul Aziz, the Kampong Ayer (the water village), Bander Seri Begawan is regarded as the most famous water settlement in South West Asia. For many years it also has been the core of business activities which included different types of trading, fishing and marine activities in Brunei. The village also has a shopping complex called the Yayasan where different kinds of fishes, jewellery, and costumes are offered for sale.
