Kuala Belait is visited by thousands of travelers from all over the world and is considered as one of the favorite tourist destinations in Brunei. Second in importance to Bandar Seri Begawan Kuala Belait is known as an important administrative sector of the district of Belait. Kuala Belait, Brunei gets its name from Kuala which means the “mouth of a river”. Belait on the other hand is known as ‘river” and “district”. Kuala Belait in Brunei has an interesting history. This small sleepy fishing hamlet was inhabited by the Malays. It is known that because of an argument between two groups one moved to the western bank of River Belait and the Kampong Sungai Teraban was established. The first phase of development was possible because of the discovery of oil in Padang Berawa. In the 1930’s Kuala Belait got its first administrative section. An upheaval was noticed during Japanese occupation in World War II.

Kuala Belait came under the rule of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin. One can see a noticeable change in the commercial sector of Kuala Belait. Kuala Belait is subdivided into various “kampongs” and some of the important kampongs are known as Kampong Tenemggong, Kampong Melayu Baru, and Kampong Lubok Palam. Kuala Belait is famous all over the world for the oil fields of Rasau. The other important oil field is known as “Kuala Belait Bunkering Station”. Some of the important tourist destinations in Kuala Belait are the Silver Jubilee Park near the South China Sea. This was a gift from the local people of the place to the Sultan. One can also find a large monument which is built in honor of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

Take a look at the other tourist attractions in Kuala Belait which includes the Kuala Belait Boat Club. This place hosts a number of prestigious racing events. The Kuala Balai is another famous historic village which tops the list of must-visits. Transportation in Kuala Belait is not at all a problem as you will find a number of buses, and ferry services which will take you to the desired destination without any difficulty. The main road starts from the border of Malaysia and runs through the town of Muara and will take you to Kampong Mumong. You can also avail of the taxi services and the famous “water taxi” which will take you to Kuala Balai from Kuala Belait.
