Airports in Brunei

There are two airports in Brunei and both of them are known to operate both domestic and international flights to various countries. There are two civil airports in Brunei and the Brunei International Airport is located in Bandar Seri Begawan. The other famous airport in Brunei is known as the Anduki Airport. The Brunei International Airport is the main airport in Brunei and a number of important airline companies operate daily flights to this main airport. So getting to Brunei will not be a problem and you will have important airline companies like the AirAsia, Royal Brunei Airlines, Thai Airways International, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways International and Tiger Airways operating both domestic and international flights to Brunei.

Among the airports in Brunei the Brunei International Airport is more important as the “Royal Brunei Air Force” is located in “Rimba Air Base”. The Rimba Air Base is part of the Brunei International Airport. It was in 1953 that air services in Brunei started on a commercial basis. The connecting flights to Brunei operated between Anduki and the Bandar Seri Begawan. Initially the flights that came to Brunei came directly from Malaysia and most of the travelers came from areas like Labuan and Lutong. Air services were operational between Berakas which had a runway built during World War II.

The Japanese soldiers built the runway for their own benefit. This was popularly known as the Brunei Airport. A discussion about the airports in Brunei will be incomplete without a mentioning the Brunei Airport which is known as the first “airport in Brunei”. It was during the 70’s that a civil aviation movement resulted in a growth of air travel in Brunei. Many changes were made in the airports in Brunei and as the old airport could not mange this rush the government decided to search for the site of a new airport. It was in “Mukim Berakas” that a site was chosen for the construction of new airport. It was decided that this was the most suitable place for the airport as this place was accessible from all parts of the country. 1974 was an important year in the history of airports in Brunei as the new modern airport became operational.

Getting around Brunei from the airports in Brunei is not at all a problem. Today the Brunei International Airport is accessible to 2 million passengers. An estimated 50,000 tons of cargo is transported to the Brunei International Airport every year. Flights to Brunei travel from various parts of the world like Kuala Lampur, Auckland, Bangkok, Brisbane, London, Kota Kinabalu, Perth, Shanghai, Singapore and Sydney.
