History: Hilly, residential Buda and historic Óbuda merged with flat to form Pest-Buda in 1873. It is believed civilization began in Budapest since then. But Hungary was a land of many civilizations like: Celts, Romans, Huns, Mongols, Turks, Slovaks, Austrians, and Germans for over thousand years. Hungary joined hands with Germany as an ally of WWI and ended up disastrously. Soon a republic was set up in Budapest.

Economy: Budapest is a major industrial sector of Hungary. The main industries are engineering, textiles, electronics, chemicals, and food processing. Budapest also specializes in the production of railroad equipment, buses, and river craft.

Transport System: The Budapest Ferihegy International Airport is located at 10 miles south west from the heart of the city. The airport has two terminals: one for low cost airlines and two is again divided into two terminals: 2A for departure and arrival of flights of Malév Hungarian Airlines and 2B for hosting all international careers’ flight. Budapest is a very important railway junction. Over 50 trains link Budapest to more than 25 capital cities of Europe. The three main international railway junctions are: Keleti pályaudvar, Nyugati pályaudvar, Déli pályaudvar. Budapest can also be reached by coach, river, and car. The main public transports are buses, trolleybuses, trams, underground trains, over ground suburban trains, and taxis.

Society & Cultural Life: Around the year 2000, Budapest was tagged with the new name of “cultural avenue.” Hungary is flashing with

amusement all through the year. The cultural entertainments of Budapest, starting from theatrical performances, to classical music concerts, will keep you glued to your seats. The climate of Budapest is also favorable for open air events from October till March. Few most celebrated events of Budapest are: Christmas Fair at Vörösmarty Square, and the celebration of New Year’s Eve, Budapesti Búcsú Festival, Budapest Parade, International Wine and Champaign Festival, Budapest Marathon etc.

Administration and Government: The mayor of Budapest is Gabor Demszky. With most countries embassies located in the city, Budapest is the center of all political affairs. Today Budapest is divided into 22 districts.
