Champanagar is located in the Bhagalpur district of Bihar at a distance of about 220 km from Patna, the capital city of Bihar. The importance of Champanagar as a Buddhist destination lies in the fact that it was the place where the Buddha made several important discourses. It's believed that the small town of Champanagar might have derived its name from Champaka trees, known for their exotic flowers with strong and sweet perfume.

Champanagar also had a large tank known as Gaggara's Lotus Lake, which was full of beautiful lotuses. It's believed that on its bank was a lush green Champaka tree, which was a favorite spot of the Buddha. The beautiful lake is now known as the Sarovana Talab.
