Located at a distance of about 40 km from Bodhgaya, Gurpa is a small but important Buddhist destination in India. The small village of Gurpa has acquired great religious importance because of its association with Maha Kassapa, who was the successor of Lord Buddha and described equal to him in many respect by Lord Buddha himself.

According to legends, when Maha Kassapa realized that his life was very close to end, he set out for Kukkutapadagiri, his favorite mountain resort. It's said that when massive rocks hindered his progress to the peak, he struck them with his staff and they opened up to let him through. When he reached the summit and fell into a deep meditative trance and the rocks closed around him. This beautiful and sacred mountain peak is now known as Gurpa. According to Buddhist beliefs when Maitreya, the future Buddha, will appear in the world, he will visit Gurpa and awaken Maha Kassapa to receive the Buddha's robe from him, before announcing the new dispensation.
