Located at about 22 km from Gaya, Kurkihar was one of the important Buddhist sites of India with an ancient Buddhist Monastery. Now, the monastery has been converted into a huge mound on which the Kurkihar village stands. The village came into light when 148 bronze artifacts were excavated from this mound, containing Bodhisattvas in various shapes and sizes, bells, stupas and ritual objects.

One of the two Temples of Kurkihar also has a good collection of Buddhist sculptures, which have been found in the region over the years. The statue of Akshobhya Buddha is the most remarkable among them, located at the entrance of the temple. Some of the collections excavated from Kurkihar have been kept in the Patna Museum and the Indian Museum in Kolkata.
