Located at about 25 km from Bettiah in west Champaran Bihar, Lauriya Nandangar is a small but important town from Buddhist point of view. According to the historians and archaeologists, Emperor Ashoka might have constructed some 40 pillars in the town, but now only one stands in its complete form.

Standing graciously, the 33 ft high polished sandstone Pillar is rated amongst the most impressive pillars erected by the Ashoka. The Pillar still exhibits a brilliant Mauryan polish despite centuries of exposure to the elements. One of the most impressive Buddhist monuments, it has six of Ashokan edicts issued in the year 244 BC inscribed on it. Sitting on its top is a fine sculpture of crouching lion, whose face was shot at and destroyed by a cannon in 1660 AD.

The Stupa is about 26 m high with a circumference of nearly 457 meters, making it one of the biggest stupas ever built in India.
