During its excavation, the ruins of amazing stupas, chaityas and viharas were found. Also found were some outstanding memorial pillars, jewelry, coins, statues and some impressive white marble excellent sculptures of the Buddha, depicting the life of lord Buddha. These items are now housed in a museum on the island. The museum also has a 10 ft high statue of standing Buddha.
The most important stupa, the Mahachaitya (the Great Stupa), contains the sacred relies of the Buddha- a small tooth and an earring. Decorated with a large garland-ornament, the stupa measures 32.3 meters in diameter, 18 meters in height and 4 meters in width. Nagarjunakonda was also famous for its monastic University, founded by the great Buddhist scholar, Nagarjuna. How to Reach
Vijaywada (65 km) and Hyderabad (150 km) are the two major and nearest airports from Nagarjunakonda. Guntur (36km) is the nearest town and railhead from the place and is well connected by a good rail and road network with major cities of Andhra Pradesh. Nagarjunakonda is easily accessible from Guntur and Vijaywada as frequent taxis and buses are available from these places.
