Located near Gaya, Pragbodhi is an important Buddhist destination in the Indian state of Bihar. Pragbodhi is the small but beautiful mountain where Prince Siddhartha spent his six years, practicing severe austerities and meditation in search for the truth of life. Pragbodhi translates to ' Prior to Enlightenment' and it is now known as Dhungeswara. According to Buddhist legends, Lord Buddha stayed in a small cave, half way up this mountain and practiced severe asceticism for six years.

Now marking the site, there is a small temple near the cave. In addition, there are ruins of several ancient stupas on the top of the mountain. From the top, you can also see the spire of the Mahabodhi temple in the distance. Visit Pragbodhi and see the place where the Buddha spent the major part of his life, in quest for the search of truth. See the cave and the temple to get an idea about the place, the Buddha chose for meditations. Spend sometimes meditating in the tranquil surroundings of Pragbodhi and relieve your mind and soul.

How to Reach

spend the day at Pragbodhi meditating, sleep overnight and walk back the next morning. You might also like to take with you a copy of the Mahasihanada Sutta and or the Ariyapariyesana Sutta in which the Buddha vividly about his six year quest for truth.
