Geography: Cairo is located in the north of Egypt, on the banks of the Nile River. The agricultural land of Cairo is situated next to the river. The city extends into the desert lying in the east of Cairo.
History: The history of Cairo can be broadly divided into four periods: Greek, Islamic, French Occupation and British Occupation periods. The old Cairo was founded in AD 641. It was then known as Al-Fustat. In 1171 it was conquered by Saladin and remained an important center of Muslims rule. From 1250 to 1517 Mamluks took-over Egypt and made Cairo their capital. Later in 1922 the city came under the British rule.

Economy: Due to a large population of the country residing in this part of Egypt, the majority of the commerce is generated from here. Most of the media houses, nearly all the film studios, umpteen numbers of universities and several hospitals are located in Cairo. Due to the rapid urban developments of the city, it has been termed as “hyper-urbanization.”
Society & Cultural Life: Cairo is a culturally rich city with Cairo Opera House as the main venue for drama, dance, film, and music. The age old cultural heritage of Cairo goes back to more than seven thousand years. A blend of Greek, Roman, Islam, Pharaohs, and Egyptian culture could be seen here. There are umpteen numbers of cultural centers here hosting several musical shows, film festivals, exhibitions and other cultural events. Cairo is popularly known as the Hollywood of middle-east. Paying “bakshish” or tips is a very popular custom of Cairo.
Transport System: Being the hub of nearly the whole Egyptian transportation network, Cairo has and extensive road network, rail system, subway system and maritime services. The main highways are: Delta Highway, Desert Highway, Highway 2, Highway 3, and Highway 33. Metro is the best option to keep roaming around the city. The main airport of Cairo is Cairo International Airport.
Educational Institutions: For ages, Cairo has been the educational hub of Egypt as well as the world. A large number of higher educational institutes, schools, and colleges are all located in Cairo.British International School in Cairo (BISC), Cairo American College (CAC), and International School of Choueifat are the three international schools of Cairo. Cairo University, Ain Shams University, Helwan University, and Al Azhar University are the main universities of Cairo.
