Transportation in Cambodia



Transportation in Cambodia is one of the major concerns for both the inhabitant and also the tourists. Cambodia had a weak transport infrastructure during peace times and that created a lot of problem in speeding up the relief measures during emergency. Today, the authorities have gathered all their resources so as to develop the Transportation in Cambodia. Railway Transportation in Cambodia:

There are two major rail routes in Cambodia, originating from Phnom Penh. The first railway tracks were set up by the French and it extended from Phnom Penh to Poipet. Later it was extended to Thailand in 1942 by the Royal State Railways. The other line was built in between 1960 and 1969 with the help of the Republic of China, France and West Germany. This line extended from Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville. Despite, tremendous disturbances during the world wars and the guerilla warfare the rail services continued and was upgraded in 2006 with the help of the loan from the Asian Development bank.

There are also Bamboo Railways that is commonly known as 'nori' or 'lorries'. This is one of the most used transportation in Cambodia among the locals. They run on the usual tracks, powered by Briggs and Stratton type air-cooled gasoline engines.

Roadways in Cambodia:

The other common medium of Transport in Cambodia is by road. The roads are cut out of asphalt and crushed stone. Buses and trucks ply on the roads. There are 8 highways in Cambodia which links the city to various parts of the city and also to the neighboring countries.

Seaports and Harbors:

There are two major port in Cambodia, namely, Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville. There are 5 other ports in the city that serves Cambodia.

Getting to Cambodia by Air:

The best way of getting Cambodia is via Air flights. The Phnom Penh International Airport is the major airport. There are also 3 heliports in Cambodia. So if you are making a tour to Cambodia, Transportation would never be a problem.
