History of Cambodia



The extensive History of Cambodia reflects the rich Culture of Cambodia and its heritage. The Cambodia History dates back to the 1st millennium AD. The states of Funan and Chenla combined to form the present country of Cambodia. Cambodia is a South East Asian country that has Phnom Penh as its capital city. The states of Funan and Chenla were previously assumed by the historians to be closely related to the countries of China and India. The Khmer Empire rose in to power and thrived during the period from 9th century to 13th century after the fall of the states. History of Cambodia states that the center power was vested in the Angkor and chain of capitals were built here among with numerous temples. But during 1432, the capital was shifted to Lovek.

To protect Cambodia, King Norodom in the year of 1863 asked for protection of France. Cambodia became and continued as the protectorate of France from the years of 1863 to 1953. A French colony developed in this country. But on the November 9, 1953, Cambodia attained its independence and came under the constitutional monarchy of King Norodom Sihanouk.

A rebel forces called Lon Nol assumed power and the US force invaded Cambodia. Bombing continued until the Cambodian communists again gained their ground against the Khmer Rouge. It is because of these bombing around 2 million people were made refugees, which in turn fled for life to Phnom Penh.

With the end of the war, another mishap stroke Cambodia. The country faced famine resulting in mass loss of life, malnourished people. Rice plantation was also adversely affected.

In the years of 1975, the Khmer Rouge again rose to power and reached Phnom Penh and changed the name of the country Cambodia to the Democratic Kampuchea. These forces led by Pol Pot made the people residing in this city to go no marches to rural projects. They disposed off the western medicine that resulted in the death and starvation of thousands of life. This regime attempted to make the agricultural projects based on the model of 11th century. The mass destruction led to the fleeing of the people to the neighboring country of Thailand.

To stop the genocide of Vietnamese and the raids of Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, Vietnam force invaded Cambodia. However a peace settlement was made by the United Nations.

After all these violence meted out to the nation and its people in the 1970s and the 1980s the renovation process again started to bring back the political stability to Cambodia. Cambodia has been helped economically by various developed countries like France, Australia Japan, Canada, and the United States.

History of Cambodia is enriching and interesting in the sense that it lets the people to know about the rich culture and internal problems of the country.
