Banteay Kdei, Siem Reap

The temple of Banteay Kdei, Siem Reap was constructed by Jayavarman VII during the 12th and 13th Centuries. This popular temple is located southeast of Ta Prohm and to the east of Angkor Thom. One of the main highlights of this temple is its intricate system of galleries and vestibules. These galleries and vestibules were added to the main towers after the completion of their construction and make this temple look like a cloister. Banteay Kdei, Siem Reap was built of sandstone and is in a very poor condition as of now. However, despite the deterioration of the main face of this temple, you can still see some very beautiful lintels and pediments here.

Banteay Kdei in Siem Reap is also known as the 'The Citadel of the Cells'. This popular temple was built in accordance to the Ta Prohm monastic pattern and comprises of a small paved terrace that leads to the sanctuary's twin courtyards. There are some puzzling square pillars with handles erected in the very center of these courtyards. The significance of these pillars baffles archaeology students even today. Similar pillars have been found in Ta Prohm and Preah Khan as well.

The temple of Banteay Kdei in Siem Reap is located on the shore of Srah Srang and was built as a Buddhist monastic complex by Jayavarman II. Recent archeological excavations have led to the discovery of a large quantity of Buddha images buried underground. The reasons for their burial here are still unknown. Local authorities have started restoration of this site. The present day dilapidated condition of this temple can be blamed on the poor quality building material used to construct it. The sandstone used to build this temple is very prone to crumbling.

Banteay Kdei temple in Siem Reap is surrounded by four concentric walls, earning it the popular nickname of the temple of towers and corridors. The outer walls of this temple measure 500 by 700 meters.
