Banteay Sam Re Temple, Siem Reap

Banteay Sam Re Temple, Siem Reap is a temple located at Angkor in Cambodia. It is located to the east of the East Baray and was built under Suryavarman II and Yasovarman II in the first half of the 12th century. Banteay Sam Re Temple, Siem Reap is a Hindu temple that has been built in the Angkor Wat style and was christened after the “Samré”, or the ancient people of Indochina. The construction materials used to build this temple are the same as those used to build the Banteay Srei. In fact, a visit to Banteay Samre can be easily combined with a trip to Banteay Srei. The whole excursion will take approximately half a day and it is best to go on this trip in the morning.

In the absence of any maintenance, Banteay Sam Re Temple in Siem Reap was overrun with vegetation and cluttered with fallen blocks from its upper parts. This once magnificent structure was hence reduced to nothing more than ruins lost in the forest. However, the dedicated efforts of anastylosis have now transformed it into one of the finest monuments of the Angkor group and one of the most complete temples. The ornamentation of this temple is exceptional in quality and very well preserved in its entirety. Today, carvings at Banteay Sam Re Temple in Siem Reap are regarded as one of the finest instances of the classic art depicted on a clear sandstone background that is in itself a function of the architecture.

An interesting feature of Banteay Sam Re Temple in Siem Reap is that many scenes on the frontons of the upper levels of this temple depict episodes from the Vessantara Jataka. Visitors can also see many Buddhist scenes in this temple. Howevwr, in some places certain sculpted Buddhist motifs have been mutilated, making a curious statement about the religious tolerance of the monument's patron.

Banteay Sam Re Temple, Siem Reap is one of the must see tourist attractions in Siem Reap that you must include in your tour itinerary.
