Kampot

Kampot, tucked away near the base of the Elephant Mountains on the Kampong Bay River, is characterized by its quaint, warm, small town charm. It has evolved into one of the major Tourist Destinations in Cambodia as it gives a feel of provincial Cambodia with its laid-back atmosphere. Kampot is also famous as the base for the Bokor Hill Station, the beaches and islands of Kep and the rest of southeastern Cambodia.

Visit the Bokor Hill Station, built by the French authorities in the early 1920s. Experience the breathtaking views of the coast and the cool mountain surroundings. Bokor Mountain is a heavily forested area and you can arrange for trips beyond Bokor including jungle trekking. The wildlife is teeming with wild elephants and other jungle animals.

Visit the caves near Kampot. You will find several limestone mountains dotting the landscape between Kampot and Kep. Many of them feature limestone caves. Some of these caves are adorned with exotic rock formations and almost all the caves are well known Buddhist shines. Visit the pre-Angkorian ruin set in the caves of Phnom Chhnork among stalagmites and stalactites. Watch out for the limestone formations near the entrance of the cave in the shapes of elephants. The cave at Phnom Sla Ta'aun makes for interesting climb. The cave at Phnom Sasear, also known as the ‘White Elephant Cave’, is located next to a pagoda. The stairs up the side of the rock outcrop offer a beautiful view of the countryside. The cave contains a shrine at the base of a limestone formation which resembles a white elephant.

Kep Beach in Kampot in Cambodia is a crescent of sand stretching for a kilometer near the tip of the Kep peninsula. The road through Kep follows the coastline to the beach and then circles back. You will find dining platforms and seafood vendors lining the road behind the beach. You can also go for river trips in Kampot. Short sunset river cruises or longer cultural, wildlife and eco trips upriver can be arranged. Sunset river cruises running from Kampot to the rapids at Tekchhou are the more popular ones.
