Cameroon is a republic of central and western Africa. During the 15th century the Portuguese explorers reached the coast and they named the area as" Rio dos Camarões or the "River of Prawns", the name from which Cameroon has derived its name. Among the early inhabitants, the Fulani soldiers founded the Adamawa Emirate in the north in the 19th century. During this period various groups from the west and north-west invaded the country.
