Sightseeing in Ngaoundere

Sightseeing in Ngaoundere is always an interesting outing. Ngaoundere is at the end of the railroad north form Yaoundé. The city is about 800 kilometers north-east of the country. Sightseeing in Ngaoundere includes a visit to the Benoue Park. Though Ngaoundere has few sights but they are quite charming. The Palace du Lamido is the main attraction. It is especially interesting in weekends when the locals come here to pay their tribute to the Lamido.

The Palais du Lamido is the place where the local chief resides. He resides in this palace with his numerous wives. The exterior of the palace is not interesting but some of the traditional buildings inside are quite fascinating. Other things to be seen in the palace at the Palais, is where the Lamido holds court and conducts marriages, and where the royal barber plies his trade. Friday and Sunday are the best days to visit the place as one can see many nobles from surrounding area who come to pay their respects

One has to traverse for about 800 kilometers from Yaoundé by train to reach Ngaoundere. The Benoue Park is nearby and is another major attraction. The Benoue Park is Cameroon's one of the most important national parks and game reserves. In fact it is the second largest of the reserve. A long stretch of the Benoue River forms the eastern boundary of the park. The road linking Garoua and Ngaoundere makes up part of the western boundary while a public road, to Tchollire, runs along the northern part of the park.

The park is largely surrounded by Hunting Reserves. Some large rocky massifs rise to altitudes of 600 to 750 meters above the undulating plain at 250 to 500 meters. The vegetation includes several types of Sudanian woodland dry Anogeissus forest, semi-evergreen riparian forest and thickets along the Benoue and its major affluents. The level of the sandy Benoue River fluctuates seasonally and exposes sandbars which provide habitat for plovers and other water birds in the dry season.

To reach the place one needs to have a guide. January to May is the best time to visit the park. After visiting Benoue Park, one can also visit Korup National Park as well.
