Calgary Stampede - History
In 1886, the first Calgary Exhibition was held after the coming of the Canadian Pacific railway in the city. A separate event called the Calgary Stampede was started in 1912 by Guy Weadick, who was an American trick roper. It was Weadick's wish to bring world-class rodeo in an event which would bring the best cowboys from around the world. The first competition was attended by over 100,000 spectators and the total prize money was around $20,000. The event has been taking place since then.
