Weather in Chad varies according to the different regions of the country. The Weather in Chad is extreme at times and sometimes is marked by long periods of droughts. Chad enjoys a hot and tropical climate. Temperatures vary in different areas of the country. Temperatures are much cooler along the south-central Sahel. Rainfall in south-central Sahel averages near 15 inches annually. Drought, however, happens sometimes.
The central rains last from June to September and the southern rainy season lasts from May to October. The northern part experiences less rainfall in a year. The dry season in the country is more often than windy and cooler during the evenings.
The 2 strong air masses greatly influence the climate of the Lake Chad region. The dry continental air mass and a humid, maritime air mass frequently collide creating unexpected weather patterns in the country. Precipitation takes place when a great depth of humid air mass accumulates in the Chad basin.
In fact, the thickness of the air mass varies greatly from day to day and year to year causing fairly unpredictable weather conditions altogether. By the end of the dry season, the air is thick with dry air mass and evaporation occurs. The dry season is a grueling time in Chad. During this period of time, there is hardly any rain for days. Large amounts of dust and sand in the air cause dust storms that lead to extremely poor visibility. There is a great loss of water in the lake due low humidity and the winds.
July to September experiences the highest amounts of rainfall. The annual rainfall is roughly 22 inches in the southern part of the lake and 10 inches in the northern part. Droughts which are a common phenomenon within Chad basin occur several times each year.
The average temperature during the rainy season is approximately 90F or 32C. In the months of October and November, the temperature goes way above the 90F mark. During the months of December and January, average temperatures can be around 47F or 8C. The hottest month of the year is April when temperatures can touch 110F or 43C mark. Linens and tropical waterproof clothing are the dresses required to beat the temperature of Chad.
