La Chascona, Santiago is a beautiful house built in 1953 by the famous Pablo Neruda. It was named ‘La Chascona’ or ‘the uncombed’ to honor Matilde Urrutia who was his secret lover until 1955. She later became his third wife. This important Santiago tourist attraction is situated in the Bellavista neighborhood. Pablo Neruda was born on 12th July 1904 in Parral a Chilean town in the south. On 1st October 1971 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He died on 23rd September 1973.
The architect Germán Roríguez planned La Chascona in Santiago facing the sun. But Neruda wanted the house facing the mountains. Both the poet and the architect argued about the design and changed the blueprints. The living room and a bed room was the first to be built at La Chascona, Santiago. From 1953 to 1955 a kitchen and a dining room was built. Later a bar and a library were added to the house. In 1958 the last additions were done by architect Carlos Martner since Rodríguez went back to Europe.
You can take tours of La Chascona, Santiago which features eclectic designs. All these designs gave Neruda the title ‘organic architect’. Stairs, winding garden paths and bridges lead to this cozy house. The library is filled with books; the bedroom is located in a tower and has a secret passageway.
Inside La Chascona, Santiago you can see collections of seashells, butterflies, wineglasses. All these objects inspired the poet’s romantic poetry and tumultuous life. Pablo Neruda also had two other houses on the coast in Valparaíso and in Isla Negra. All these three houses are museums now. La Chascona, Santiago is situated on Fernando Marquez de La Plata.
