Huascar in Talcahuano is a small armoured turret ship. It was mainly used for monitoring the various war activities. The ship was built in Britainand played very important part for Peru. Huascar in Talcahuano was ordered by the government of Peru from the Laird Brothers shipyards in 1864, for the war against Spain. It was launched in Birkenhead on October 7, 1865.
Captain José María Salcedo used to command over Huascar in Talcahuano. He was the person who had supervised the construction on behalf of the Peruvian Navy. It left for Peru on January 20, 1866 on a test trip. During the journey some trouble took place and the ship had to wait for a month a at Brest. The ship has a minor collision with ironclad Independencia on 28 Februar. The neutral countries refused to repair it. After the problem had been overcome. The repair work continued for a month at Rio de Janeiro. In between various other incidents followed and finally Huascar in Talcahuano was called port at Ancud in allied Chile to join the rest of the combined fleet on June 7. By then, it was too late to join the conflict.
Again Under Captain Lizardo Montero, Huascar prepared at Valparaíso to participate in a late 1866 expedition to fight the Spanish fleet at the Philippines. Eventually various objections were raised and the expedition was cancelled.On February 1868, Captain Miguel Grau took command of Huascar and remained there until 1876.Huascar also participated in the Peruvian Civil War of 1877. On May 29, 1877, it fought the inconclusive Battle of Pacocha against two British vessels.
