Valparaiso Natural History Museum, Valparaiso is one of the famous tourist attractions in this beautiful city in Chile. The museum is positioned on Condell Street, inside the premises of the magnificent Palacio Lyon. A wide variety of collections is housed in the Valparaiso Natural History Museum, Valparaiso.

The Valparaiso Natural History Museum in Valparaiso was founded by Don Eduardo de la Barra in the year 1878. The first owner of the museum was the Scotsman Santiago Lyon, whose lineage can be traced back to the Kings of Scotland. Since the year 1929, the museum has become part of the Dirección de Bibliotecas, Archivos y Museos.

The Valparaiso Natural History Museum, Valparaiso has about 110,000 historical pieces on display. These exhibits are arranged into four types of collections -


  • Natural Science section: The exhibits in this section include mollusks, reptiles, insects, fish, mammals and fossils.
  • Archaeology section: Objects on display include those from the diaguita, moche and chimú cultures, ethnic objects from Easter Island in Samoa, as well as objects from the South Chilean selknam and yámanas groups.
  • Historical Heritage section: Various works of art and photographs are preserved here.
  • Library: The books available here specialize in natural science and archaeology.

In the year 1979, the structure in which the Valparaiso Natural History Museum is housed, was declared a national monument.The Valparaiso Natural History Museum in Valparaiso has an elegant façade. The beautifully adorned interiors are well-kept. This hugely built building has vaulted cellars that are of high technical quality. There are large rooms inside the museum, surrounded by walls with elaborate decoration.

The Valparaiso Natural History Museum, Valparaiso remains open to public from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm and again from 2 pm to 6 pm. On Sundays and public holidays, the museum remains open from 10 in the morning till 2 in the afternoon. Admission to the museum is free on Wednesdays, Sundays and public holidays.
