It lies in the region of Atacama. Caldera has a well developed harbor protected by backwaters. It serves as the port city for the rich mining district in and around Copiapo.
Caldera is connected to Copiapo by the first railroad that was constructed in Chile. The population of the port city has grown from 2,130 in 1903 to about 14, 000 inhabitants at present.Caldera is located about 75 kilometers west of Copiapo at the Pacific. It has played a significant role in boosting the economy of the region. The economy of the region consists of copper ore mining. Cultivation and export of citrus fruits is also a major source of income for the region. All these are exported via the port. Fishing and tourism also play an important role in boosting the economy of the city. The nice beaches around attract many visitors world-wide.
Because of its proximity to the Atacama Desert coast, the climate of Caldera, Chile is very dry and hot. You are advised to carry lightweight clothes and umbrella to protect yourself from the scotching sun.
Caldera has many tourist attractions. The famous tourist sites here include the church of San Vicente de Paul built in 1862 and the cave of Padre Negro. Both the places are worth visiting in the city. The noted artist Padre Velasquez painted the biblical motifs in the cave in 1978.
The city also boasts of a nice beach at Bahia Playa Inglesa. About 11 kilometers northwards of Caldera, lies the famous Santuario de la Naturaleza Granito Orbicular. Here, a tourist can see the orbicular granite. About 30 kilometer to the north, is located the Pan de Azucar National Park. It is well known for its mist forests and Humboldt penguins.
The English Bay is a well known resort located about 6 kilometers away from Caldera, Chile. English Bay is very popular amongst both the leisure tourists and locals for its sprawling white beaches and warm waters. The light house in Caldera is also a popular attraction of the region. The rotating wooden structure flashes light every 90 seconds.
