Copiapo is a small town located in the north of Chile. It is surrounded by beautiful hills and dense vineyards. Both of these make it a nice place for a tourist to visit and explore the region. Though the town is located in the southern end of the Atacama Desert, it offers a lush oasis of greenery all around. Formerly the town was known as San Francisco de la Selva or Saint Francis of the Jungle. The first railway line in South America was built in the year 1854 in Copiapo, Chile.
The center of the town has a bus station. Buses from the north of the town like, Antofagasta, Iquique, Arica bring tourists all throughout the day. At the south terminal of the city center buses from the south like La Serena and Santiago arrive. Tour-bus services have its terminal on Calle Chanarcillo and Pullman has its terminal in Colipi.
One of the major attractions in the small town is the Museo Mineralogico. It lies between Calle Colipi and Rodriguez. It has an impressive collection of minerals. It is close to the city center and is open every day, until 17:45 pm.
The Plaza A Pratt is a very pleasant park in the town. It is located right in the center of town. The place is full of trees of varying sizes. People frequent this park to take rest or talk under the shade of the trees. The park is also a great place for reading or just spending a few hours relaxing in the shade. It has many comfortable benches for the convenience of visitors.
The town also has a large Lider supermarket on Chacabuco. As the only supermarket in the town, the Lider supermarket is located very close to the center and the bus terminals. The market has a wide variety of shops were you can buy a lot of stuff particularly if you are stocking up before a bus ride. It a nice place to hang around when you are in search of something new and attractive which you want to take home.
Maspizza, Atacama is a famous and most frequented food outlet in the town. Here, you can get good pizzas at a reasonable price. The well made pizzas have a wide variety of toppings.
