Vallenar is a city and commune in the Atacama Region of Chile. As the capital of the Huasco Province, Vallenar is located in the valley of the Huasco River. The area dominated by agricultural plantations is 145 kilometer south of Copiapo and 668 kilometer away from Santiago.
Vallenar was founded as San Ambrosio de Ballenary by Ambrose O’Higgins in 1789.The town has a population of 47,000 inhabitants. The main activities of the people of the town are farming and mining. Llanos de Challe National Park is located 60 kilometers northwest of the city of Vallenar.
As a center for iron mining, the town has a developing agricultural industry. This is primarily due to the flow of river Huasco. The recent construction of the Santa Juana Reserve has caused the lands to become more fertile. Vegetables, fruit trees and vineyards are also produced here.
Located on the Pacific coast of the Atacama Region, Chile Llanos de Challe National Park is a famous park in the country. The mountains of the park are moistened by the Camanchaca. The highest elevation in the park is Cerro Negro which has an altitude of about 950 meters.
The delicate coastal desert ecosystem of the park is habitat for less seen and beautiful plants species. These include the threatened Leontochir ovallei which is commonly known as Garra de Leon. In addition to these the park abounds in cactus.
The largest population of Guanacos in the Atacama Region can be found here. The seashore of the park and the surrounding area feature unspoiled white sand beaches and a coastal wetland, which provides refuge to Red-gartered Coots, Common Moorhens, Flamencos and Black-necked Swans.
The Museum of the Huasco is one of the major tourist attractions in the city. Here, you can get information on the mineralogy, paleontology, botany, zoology and history of Huasco. The beaches by the coast are also beautiful. So in the interior of Vallenar, you will get to see the contrast between the aridness and the green of the valley.
