The temple was built originally in 537. Later it was re-built many times. In the course of time it went through a change of names- from Changshou Temple to Jinghui Temple to its final name. The name of Temple of the Six Banyan Trees was given by Su Dongpo belonging to the Song Dynasty. He was a great littérateur. There is an interesting story behind this name. So Dongpo visited the temple on his way towards the north. On his return journey he found six banyan trees flanking the temple. The trees always put him in good cheer. So, when he was invited to suggest a name for the temple he proposed that the temple which was then called Jinghui Temple should be called the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees.

Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, Guangzhou: An Inside Tour
On entering the temple through the mountain gate you will find the Tianwang Hall. The hall houses the Laughing Buddha. The smiling face of the idol of Buddha greets the visitors. Behind this Laughing Buddha you will find the Weituo Hall which houses another idol of Buddha which has a straight and serious face. The temple is home to the Six Banyan Pagoda or the Flowery Pagoda. The Six Banyan Pagoda houses Buddhist relics. The roofs of the Pagoda curve upwards giving the structure an impression of red flower petals. The Pagoda's tip looks like stamens and the structure as a whole appears as a large stigma projecting into the air. Thus, the pagoda was called as the Flowery Pagoda by the people.
