One of most visited Guilin Tourist Attractions is the Elephant Trunk Hill, Guilin. The city of Guilin is on the west bank of the Lijiang River in northeast Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in China. The Elephant Trunk Hill, Guilin is situated southeast of the city on the west bank of Li River. The hill was originally named as Li Hill, Yi Hill and Chensui Hill.
The Elephant Trunk Hill in Guilin gets its name from the shape of the hill resembling an elephant sucking water through its trunk. The hill is 55 meters above water and measures 108 meter in length and 100 meter in width. There is a cave in the shape of a full moon between the legs and trunk of the elephant and is known as 'Moon over Water Cave'. The best time to visit the cave is during a full moon night when the moonlight reflects on the water surface in the cave.
The walls and the inside of the cave of the Elephant Trunk Hill, Guilin has over 70 inscriptions and carvings from the Song and Tang dynasties. These inscriptions praise the beauty of the hills and the nature nearby. One of the notable inscriptions is a poem by Lu You (1125-1210) who was one of the four great Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) poets.
Just halfway up the Elephant Trunk Hill, Guilin is another cave which looks like the eyes of the elephant. Through this cave you can view Guilin city and on top of the hill is a pagoda named Puxian Pagoda. The two storey pagoda was built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and is surrounded by trees.
