Dragon Well


Dragon Well, Hangzhou is one of the most popular tourist attractions and a must visit place in Hangzhou. Dragon Well, the joint of southern ridges and northern ridges of West Lake, is situated on Phoenix Hill with rich forests and expansive areas to store rainfall. It is due to this fact that in this region the spring water gushes out even in draught. According to the villagers the spring which provides water for the well was discovered some time before 1800. The Dragon well is situated 3 kilometers to the southwest of West Lake and to the east there is a village with the same name. The name of the Dragon Well, Hangzhou is so because the ancient people thought dragons lived in that place.

Inhabitants of the East Wu during Three Kingdoms Period once came here during draught to pray for rainfall. Hence the place came to be known as "Dragon Well". In 1985, the Dragon Well was listed as one of the "New Top Ten" Scenic Spots of West Lake. From that time onwards, both the tea produced in this place and the scenery has become popular and valuable. The tea farmers can be spotted here, busy plucking and parching tea whose fragrance travels downhill. It is the most refreshing tourist spots in spring and people come here to try new tea and inquire about its anecdote and history.

The Dragon Well Green Tea is grown in the Longjing mountain area of Hangzhou which is situated southwest of the West Lake. Reputed to be the "Empress of Green Tea," the tea is primarily planted in Longjing or Dragon Well, a small village 20 kilometers from downtown Hangzhou. Dragon Well in Hangzhou is most famous for its unique flavor and fragrance; flat, slim strips of tea leaves in bright green liquid.
