Pavillion of the Autumn Moon


Pavillion of the Autumn Moon, Hangzhou also known as the Lake Under the Autumn Moon" lies on both sides of the Bai Causeway at the eastern end of Gushan Isle. The Pavillion of the Autumn Moon, Hangzhou was built in the year 1699. The interesting name of this place was given by an ancient poet, according to whom the under the bright autumn moon the lake looks smooth and resembles a mirror. In the 38th year of the Qing dynasty a picturesque pavilion was constructed near the lake. Today beautiful gardens, verandas and more pavilions have been built around this small lake, which is part of Hangzhou's West Lake.

The Pavillion of the Autumn Moon, Hangzhou is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Hangzhou. If you are staying in this region in autumn, then you must spend an evening here and watch the moonlight spread its mystery and magic over the whole lake. The scene is sure to take your breath away. The exquisite bridges, artificial hillocks, imaginative rockery, smooth terraces as well as flowers and trees add to the beauty of this masterpiece of Chinese-style landscape architecture. As the most captivating sight around Solitary Hill, this place is a vantage point for viewing moonlit scenery. Tourists are advised to visit here as it is a delight to view West Lake from here, particularly on a full-moon autumn night.

The Pavilion in the Pavillion of the Autumn Moon in Hanghzhou was built for the Qianlong Emperor Pinghu (reigned 1735-96), who also used to enjoy the moonlit view over the lake from here during the autumn season. An inscribed column bears his description of these magical moments, and this is why this spot bears his name.

In the northern side of the island is the Pavilion of the Cranes (Fanghe Ting), built in the Yuan period (1279-1368) in reverence of the poet Lin Hejing (967-1028). The poet was disillusioned from the world due to the corrupt officialdom and he retired here to lead a quiet life. His grave is located near the pavilion.
