Pool of the Black Dragon

The Pool of the Black Dragon, Kunming is one of the popular Kunming Attractions. The place is liked by the local people and the travelers as well. The place became a popular attraction more than 700 hundred years ago during the time of the Ming Dynasty. There are many other attractions available here apart from the Pool of the Black Dragon. The place has got a very unique name and there is an interesting legendary story associated with the naming of the place. The Pool of the Black Dragon, Kunming is located around 12 kilometers far from the city in the north eastern region.

The place is so named because in the ancient times it was believed that a black dragon lived in the pool. There are two major complexes in the Pool of the Black Dragon, Kunming. The two important buildings are the black Dragon Palace and the Longquan Temple also known as the Dragon Spring Temple. The temple was previously built by the side of the pool during the rule of the Hans. The temple had undergone several reconstructions in the later periods. This structure is the largest structure in the park. Many memorial ceremonies were held at one time on the bank of the pool, just where the temple is located. There are two courtyards and three halls.

There are huge ancient trees in front of the two temples. The tress present includes a camellia tree, cypress tree and a plum tree. The plum tree found here was planted around 1,200 years ago during the time of the Tang Dynasty. At present the branches of this tree has spread in all directions and the roots have become very crisscrossed and twisting. The cypress tree was planted during the reign of the Song rulers and the other tree was planted during the Ming Dynasty. The cypress tree has got a huge trunk and it takes around four to five people to encircle the tree. These three tress have added extra charm to the entire place.
