A general overview of Ganden Monastery, Lhasa
Ganden Monastery one of the earliest and largest Buddhist monasteries in Tibet is located on Wangbur Mountain at an altitude of 3,800 meters. Being one of the "Three great Temples", Ganden Monastery, is preserved by the National Key Cultural Relic Preservation scheme in 1961. The other two temples are the Sera Monastery and the Drepung Monastery.

Tourists visiting this monastery can have a glimpse of the following things and structures such as:

  • Have a glimpse of all the 50 structures inside the temple. Check out the Main Assembly Hall or Coqen Hall, Zhacangs, Khangtsens, and Myicuns.
  • Visit the Buddha Halls to look at the various statues of the Maitreya Buddha and the master Tsong Khapa. Tri Thok Khang one of the earliest Buddha Halls houses enshrined statues of the Sitatapatra and Manjushri Bodhisattva.
  • Enter the Coqen Hall which comprises Buddhist Guardian Hall, Mandala Hall, and other complexes.
  • Besides these the monastery possesses two Zhacang or Tantric colleges. The names are Xaze and Jamze. Both of these cover an area of nearly 1,000 square meters and are capable of holding 1,500 worshipping lamas.
  • Do not miss to visit the 23 Khangtsens and 20 Myicuns. These are where the monks stay. There is also a separate debate center known as the Nine Courtyards. It is here where the Summons Ceremonies are also performed.
  • Besides the 95 Holy Stupas, this monastery also houses rare and well preserved cultural relics, such as the armor of Qing Dynasty, exquisite tapestries from Jiangsu Province, the National Super-Class Cultural Relic and a set of thangka painted with sixteen arhats and the four Heavenly Kings. All these reflect Chinese culture and architecture at its best.
  • If you are lucky then you can enjoy the Buddha Painting Unfolding Festival held inside the monastery.
