The Drepung Monastery is situated at a distance of 5 kilometers away from the west suburbs of the city of Lhasa. It is Tibet's largest monastery. It is regarded as one of the Three Great Monasteries of Lhasa. Every year the Shoton Festival is held in the monastery. During the festival the 'Unveiling Ceremony of the Thangka of Buddha' takes place. The monastery covers an area of 250,000 square meters. The monastery during its heyday housed 540 pastures and 141 fazendas. Earlier the monastery accommodated 1,700 monks. The grand white structure of the monastery looks from afar as a heap of rice. Hence, the monastery got its name the 'Drepung Monastery ' which means the 'Monastery of Collecting Rice in Tibetan language.
The monastery was built in the year 1416 by Jamyang Qoigyi, a disciple of Tsong Khapa. The attractions of the Drepung Monastery are two pagodas and the majestic buildings of Coqen Hall, Ganden Potrang, Kamcuns, 4 Tantric Colleges and countless courtyards. The Ganden Potrang and the Kamcuns served as the residences of the Dalai Lamas( second, third, fourth and the fifth).
