New Year in Lhasa

New Year in Lhasa starts with the New Moon on the first day of the New Year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the New Year in Lhasa is called the Lantern Festival. It is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a procession.

The Chinese calendar is based on a mixture of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days. In order to catch up with the solar calendar the people in Lhasa insert an extra month once every few years. This is the same as adding an extra day on leap year. This is why, according to the solar calendar, the New Year in Lhasa falls on a different date each year.

New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are celebrated as a family event, a time of reunion and blessing. The celebration was traditionally highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honor of Heaven and Earth that is the gods of the household and the family relatives.

On the day of New Year in Lhasa the departed relatives are remembered with great respect because they were responsible for laying the foundations for the luck and glory of the family. It is one of the main festivals in Lhasa.

The presence of the ancestors is celebrated on New Year in Lhasa with a dinner arranged for them at the family feast table. The communal feast called "surrounding the stove" or weilu is held on that day. It represents family union and honoring the past and present generations.

The Chinese people are the first ones to ensure every measure to bring in the good luck in the New Year. The people sweep the floors, avoid quarreling and clean the garbage. These are some of the activities done in order to bring in the good luck and wealth in New Year. The other most famous ways to celebrate New Year in Lhasa is sharing New Year's Eve Dinner, watching and participating in dragon dancing, lion dancing and folk activities.

New Year in Lhasa is celebrated by wearing red clothes, decorating with poems on red paper. These all are associated with red, the color signifying fire and a source to drive away bad luck in New Year.
