The new Lijiang Airport will be the only airport constructed in Yunnan as an open port according to China's 11th Five-Year Plan. When it is completed, there will be three open airports in Yunnan, with the center airport located in Kunming, and two supplement airports located in Xishuangbanna and Lijiang. In addition, Lijiang airport will become the 45th mainland airport linking with Hong Kong.
The airport will play a major role in drawing tourists as by the end of the year 2008 the number of tourists expected to visit Lijiang is expected to reach 7 million.
